Professor Stephen Worthley

Stephen graduated from Medicine at the Adelaide University. His training included his Cardiology fellowship at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, his PhD at the Mount Sinai Medical Centre in New York, and post-doctoral research and interventional fellowship at Monash Medical Centre, Melbourne. He established the first dedicated Cardiac CT and MR units in the Asia Pacific region, as well as leading the Cardiovascular Research Centre at the University of Adelaide as the Helpman Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine, a position he held between 2004 to 2016.

Stephen was integral in forming a radial access program at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, which developed into the largest volume radial access program in Australia. He is also renowned for his academic work in cardiac imaging and interventional techniques. He regularly teaches and trains cardiology fellow students in interventional therapies as well as teaching and proctoring other interventional Cardiologists in a variety of procedures, including transcatheter aortic valve replacement, transcatheter mitral valve replacement, left atrial appendage occlusion and renal denervation globally. He was a dedicated provider of Cardiology services in the public sector through his role as the director of Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratories at the Royal Adelaide Hospital between 2004 and 2016.

He has published over 230 manuscripts, 5 book chapters, and co-edited a Cardiovascular Textbook. He leads a number of novel international multi-centre cardiovascular therapy trials, and his clinical and research expertise has included stem cell therapy, cardiac MRI and cardiovascular CT, transcatheter valve replacement, percutaneous mitral valve therapies and renal artery denervation therapy. He has led and performed many first-in-human cardiovascular devices. He sits on numerous industry advisory boards, journal editorial boards and government advisory groups.

Professor Stephen Worthley has held a number of healthcare leadership roles including the Executive Manager of Cardiology at GenesisCare between 2017 to 2020, and he recently led the Australian Integrated Cancer Care Program at GenesisCare culminating in the opening of the North Shore Health Hub Integrated Cancer Centre at St Leonards, Sydney.

Stephen now has created the space to focus on his clinical practice and novel therapy options for patients in Sydney, with appointments at the Mater Hospital, North Shore Private Hospital and Macquarie University Hospital. He provides consulting services at the North Shore Health Hub and performs the full gamut of interventional and structural cardiac procedures.
