The Illawarra Heart Health Centre is based at the Wollongong Hospital and is part of NSW Health. Our local health district is made up of 8 hospitals, with Wollongong the major referral hospital. The clinical trials department has over 20 years’ experience Therapeutic Areas: Cardiovascular Disease, Arrhythmias, anti-thrombolytic, Heart Failure, Hyperlipidaemia, Interventional Cardiology, Implantable Devices, Promotional heart health - Weight loss/diet/exercise and preventative disease. The Coronary Care Unit combined with Cardiac Stepdown Ward C6 East, is the only dedicated unit within the ISLHD specifically designed for care of patients with acute cardiac conditions. Patients are referred from all facilities within the ISLHD and also from the Private sector for more specialised cardiac care. The Coronary Care Unit provides care for patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction, Patients Post Primary PCI and Pre Hospital Thrombolysis, life threatening arrhythmias and patients with severe heart failure requiring non-invasive ventilation and inotropic support, which require the care of specialised Nursing and Medical Staff. Less acute patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS), cardiac arrhythmias requiring investigation and patients post PCI can be cared for in the C6 East Unit. Criteria Led Discharge for post PCI patients is in place on C6 East. A 24 hour cardiac monitoring service is also provided by C6 East in conjunction with the Geriatric service for monitoring of those geriatric patients with syncope where a cardiac cause is suspected.
